Miners: To rescue or to forget about them????

Well I know I've been focussing on American news alot, and hopefully I will have something more to talk about soon. But this one really ticked me off.....

So 3 people died trying to save the miners.... that is a tragedy.

But you really have to ask some questions about what this company has been doing? I was watching a report the other day that said that they took down the pillars that support the mine in order to make more profit. Of course the company denied, but I wouldn't doubt it.

There is nothing more important to business down south (US) then PROFIT. Regardless of what they do to the environment, or other people. I guess it is just that way of our world now.

Anyways, they have now determined that the mines are too dangerous and that the bodies are likely to never be recovered.

I was just telling my girlfriend last night, how would she feel if her sister worked for a company and they bailed on her and left her to her death, not knowing if she was dead or alive. I understand it is dangerous but they have just given up and what makes it worst is that they plan on mining in that area again.........
PATHETIC.

Ruining the City of Toronto: Part Deux

So, here we go again.... I just can't help but venting today at the incompetence of our city of Toronto officials. They are plainly and simply ruining our city!

What have they done now you ask??? They are coming up with more measures for cutbacks since they don't have enough $$$ to run the city. INCOMPETENCE I tell you.

How has the city of Toronto been run so efficiently since I was a kid, without having to worry about losing essential services-library, community centres, snow shovelling.

Here are a few examples:

http://www.thestar.com/article/245340
"$1 million by providing sidewalk and windrow plowing only when there's 15 cm of snow. The current standard is 8 cm."

"$700,000 by closing all city community centres on Mondays beginning mid-September."
"Because of the hiring freeze, "significant delays" are anticipated in issuing licences and responding to requests for inspections and bylaw enforcement, such as calls about graffiti.
Expect longer lineups at the counters dealing with parking tags, taxes, water payments and building applications."

"Park maintenance reduced.
Residential tree planting reduced.
Green Roof Initiative delayed.
Seasonal litter-pickers will be let go two weeks earlier than usual; litter vacuuming will be reduced.
Grass cut less often on streets and expressways.
December yard waste pickup cancelled.
Automated leaf pickup, in areas that have had it, will be reduced from two pickups to one.
Introduction of curbside garbage pickup at townhouses cancelled.
Night shift at Etobicoke's Disco Rd. transfer station cancelled, requiring contractors
and residents to drop waste there during daylight hours.
Adoption of a bylaw to regulate construction-related vibration delayed.
A hiring freeze means delays in bylaw enforcement, "particularly for graffiti eradication."

"Less street cleaning.
Fewer potholes fixed.
Sidewalk plowing and clearing of snow left in driveways will only occur if there is a minimum of 15 centimetres of snow, versus the former 8 centimetres"

The funniest one is that the city wants to cut its parking police stuff.... hahaha. These fools don't realize that is probably one of the best revenue sources going. You can't leave your car for more then 5 minutes in Toronto without getting a ticket.

So by cutting the amount of time that community centres and the library are open, the city hopes to save money. Yet they haven't thought about how many people they might hurt. Seniors must be excited to know that unless there is a snow storm they will have to deal with the problem.

I was reading in Fortune magazine that the New York transit is $2 per ride..... how come Toronto can't compete??? It feels like rates will be going up soon. Or they may just shut down a subway line. INCOMPETENCE.

Somebody needs to stick up to these bullies at city hall, this isn't what I voted for.

Contact them and let them know what a circus act they are running!!!

Bridge Collapses - However.....

So a bridge collapses yesterday in Minnesota, that is a tragic event and I couldn't imagine what it would be like to go through something like that.

However in the back of my head, I am hearing voices. They are saying wait a second isn't the US busy chasing terrorists and creating civil wars in other places to bother worrying about something like infrastructure????? Yes they are. They have refused to rebuild their society, or strengthen it rather and as a result this is the sort of stuff that I have come to expect under that government. To be honest, this is the kind of stuff that could happen to Toronto if we aren't careful.... incompetent self-serving leadership is only out for itself not for the greater good of society.

Rebuilding infrastructure is a normal function of taxes isn't it????

And I know everyone is going to hate me for not focusing on the tragedy, unfortunately I have to be the one to say well HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

David Miller Continues to Destroy Toronto....

In my last post about David Miller.... I was suspect to just what he was doing to improve Toronto. These two remind me of Statler and Waldorf from the muppet show...

See here... http://andrew-wright.blogspot.com/2007/05/david-miller-and-taxing-toronto.htmlogspot.com/2007/05/david-miller-and-taxing-toronto.html

However now I am livid! They want to shut down the Sheppard TTC subway line.....
So the city needs money because they apparently don't have any....how can this be so??? We must be one of the most taxed cities in Canada. Now what really irritates me, is that because they don't have the support to implement new taxes on real estate, Liquor, parking, and whatever else.

I had to email the city- to let them know what a garbage job I think they are doing. Every city needs money, but Toronto practically begs for it and the ads for 1 cent are embarrassing. I thought we were a world class city, apparently not!

I find out on the news tonight they want to cut the subway line across Sheppard Ave, that cost BILLIONS of dollars to construct a few years ago AND they plan on cutting some programs that the city provides as well. Now call me stupid but if they had saved the money in the first place they wouldn't be whining now, would they?http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20070719/ttc_cuts_071907/20070719?hub=TopStories

This is more like a "screw you" tactic for not getting their way with tax increases. But if you keep squeezing people, they will eventually scream. ARRGGHHH!!! And while some may say "
but you could have voted for someone else"... that is true but the other candidates weren't even worth my consideration.

I'm really angered that the city can't get its act together with something so simple. Don't hesitate to send an email to the city to let them know what a joke they are becoming!!! No wonder we didn't get the olympics- good grief! mailto:mayor_miller@toronto.ca

Live Earth and Al Gore...

Not sure if anyone tuned into Live Earth over the weekend.... I thought it was an incredible event. I found myself watching it all day. I have to say, I haven't seen an event like this since the big concert in the 80's/90's (I don't remember cause I was so young) for Ethiopia....

It is funny that it is always a matter of reaction then prevention that these things occur.

I'm kind of glad Al Gore lost in 2000 now (um well sort of), he obviously was meant to do bigger things.... one of the more modest people I have seen.

Anyways the event is on msn and it is posted by concert/artist....if you missed it here is the link to the videos

My visit to the hospital/ sprained ankle

So a week and a bit ago, I sprained my ankle playing capture the flag. Yes haha capture the flag, being chased out of enemy territory. Anyways I sprained my ankle pretty badly. Now being the guy I am, I just let myself naturally heal. However after a week and a half I grew tired of listening to my girlfriend tell me to go to the hospital and get it checked.

It is/was still pretty swollen and
quite painful. And there might have been a slim possibility for it to be fractured from turning it while I was running full speed.

Anyways I went to the hospital which I hate doing, heck I don't even like going to the doctors office. I probably haven't been there in a decade. The last time I went to the hospital, I had a broken wrist that I went to go get checked 4 days after it happened.

Now here is where it gets interesting..... someone comes in my room to look at me and he is a STUDENT DOCTOR, not a real doctor a student doctor. He then asks me questions, pokes around me..... and then goes to talk to the real doctor, then comes back and says I need an x-ray. I get an x-ray that came back negative and he says ice and elevation.

My question: WHERE IS THE REAL DOCTOR???? We pay between 300-1000 bucks for a health care premium now, on top of what comes out of our taxes..... that being said I WANT TO BE SEEN BY THE REAL DOCTOR AND NOT SOME STUDENT. Besides that it took nearly 4 hours for me to leave the hospital.

Hope everyone sees my point....it drove me mad!!!!

Condo Vultures... The condo market in the US

By now I'm sure that everyone knows that the housing market in the States is hurting. I found the site www.condovultures.com and was shocked to see how much the market is actually deteriorating.

Here is there public database... unfortunately they don't have pictures but I couldn't believe that prices had dropped in some cases 50-80% below the initial selling price. http://pirate.condovultures.com/view/public.php

And keep in mind these are for prime locations in Florida- Miami Beach etc...

A Report Card on Canada: Failure to innovate

So I'm watching TV and I came across this report card on the various aspects of Canada vs other places in the world. We scored "D" overall. I'm not really surprised. I think Canada needs to start encouraging entrepreneurship and cut back on its taxes. I still don't understand how we pay out the ying yang for something like a health care premium when we already pay for it in our taxes, that money could be invested in other stuff.

Look at the list below, Canada should be doing better....

"Canadians are complacent and generally unwilling to take risks,"

Canada: A land of mediocrity
HEATHER SCOFFIELD
From Wednesday's Globe and Mail
June 13, 2007 at 5:00 AM EDT
Canada's failure to innovate is spilling over into the economy, environmental protection, health care, education, and poverty eradication - turning the country into a land of stifling mediocrity, according to a harsh new report card from the Conference Board of Canada.
"This country is doing dismally in the critically important area of innovation," writes the board's president, Anne Golden. "And the implications of that failure ... show up in the absence of creative policy and investment decisions across all the other domains."
The report card, to be released today, compares Canada's performance in six domains to that of 16 other industrialized countries. The only area in which Canada receives an A is education, mainly because the country is good at pumping large quantities of students through to postsecondary institutions.
But even in education, Canada falters when it comes to producing highly educated professionals who spawn creativity, the report says.

Photogallery
A report card on Canada
Internet Links
The Conference Board: Read the report card
At the other end of the spectrum, Canada's low levels of literacy are "shocking," and prevent workers from functioning efficiently and competently in the labour force, the report says. As well, employer investment in training is falling.
In the economy, health and society domains, Canada gets a B - although lack of innovation is impeding progress.
In economics, Canada gets top marks for low inflation, and does well in growth, labour productivity and unemployment.
It gets low marks, however, for its ability to attract foreign direct investment, which often brings in fresh ideas, more investment, advanced technology and entrepreneurial ideas.
In health care, Canada does well at saving people from the flu and pneumonia, but performance on infant mortality and death from diabetes is weak.
Since Canada's health-care system is geared toward resolving urgent needs, little innovative thinking is done on how to prevent illness, the report says. Canada ranks 10th out of 17 in the "society" domain, mainly because of subpar rankings on poverty among children and the working-age population.
It ranks well in reducing poverty among old people.
But Canada fares miserably in the areas of innovation and environment, earning a D grade in both categories.
While Canada's air and water quality are high, and protection of biodiversity is solid, our level of waste generation and our battle to curb climate change are rock bottom, the report says.
Again, the lack of creative thinking to solve these problems slows progress, Ms. Golden said. And so it's no surprise that in the innovation category, Canada ranks 14th out of 17 countries - "an alarming portent for the future."
Canada's scientists don't keep up with their global peers in the number of articles published, and its inventors don't keep up in the number of patents, the report shows. For its competitive advantage, it relies on natural resources, and adds little value to goods or services. Canada has a shortage of skilled labour and graduates a low share of science, engineering and trades experts.
The country doesn't take advantage of high technology, or keep up in the commercialization of knowledge.
"Canadians are complacent and generally unwilling to take risks," the report scolds. "This culture holds Canada back."
How does the country move forward? Conference Board has 10 suggestions
In a report to be released today on the ranking of Canada's economy among those of 16 other nations, the Conference Board of Canada pulls no punches in its harsh assessment of the country's performance, but also offers solutions.
Here are 10 things the board says Canada could do to rid itself of mediocrity:
1) Focus investments on commercialization.
2) Promote cross-border investment flows.
3) Cut taxes on capital investment.
4) Cut red tape.
5) Set up a cap-and-trade system to put a price on emissions.
6) Recognize immigrants' credentials.
7) Finance a handful of world-class universities.
8) Teach all adults to read well.
9) Fund health promotion.
10) Spend more on social programs for children and poor workers.

I can't wait to see this movie. His last movie Fahrenheit 9/11 was really thoughtful and controversial and this one should definitely be no different.

He was on Oprah about a week ago and you should really check out his appearance on the show, he provided some clips of the new movie. You can get to it by clicking this link....http://www.michaelmoore.com/sicko/news/2007/06/michael-moore-talks-sicko-on-oprah.html

Paris Hilton gets to go home....what a pathetic decision

The US justice system is really pathetic. I'm sure everyone has heard that Paris Hilton got sentenced to do 30 days in jail. Well anyways according to TMZ.com , she was sent home due to mental/psychological issues.

Righhhhhttt.... So let me guess she cried, called daddy... and well now she gets to spend the rest of her sentence in her 4000 sf mansion. PATHETIC. That isn't justice. Why am I so intent on going on about this???? Because it is class ism, inequality at its best.

How many criminals get the chance to go home because of mental issues.... or have the connections to get out of jail (lawyer,Doctor) etc. It makes me sick. And as I was watching on TV the other day, people were bringing her presents to welcome her home. Obviously she was sent to prison for a reason, so why I ask is it so easy after 4-5 days for her to get out???

What a two class society we live in, and this is the perfect example....it is almost like they want to accommodate her.

I hope they reverse this, just because- and no I don't care that she has her own show and is a big celeb!!!

Google continues to amaze me with their new innovations... here is a really neat one.

It is Google Street View

Generation Y - Really interesting article about us..

I was reading Fortune magazine this past week and came across this article...

http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2007/05/28/100033934/index.htm

It is about GEN Y and the workplace, expectations and how needy we are.... and how we put ourselves first. Well no disagreement there.....

Anyways this is worth a read!!!

Real Estate Bubble..... here is an example...

So I was checking out one of the blogs that I normally check out, which is where I got this info and picture from (Trader Tim) . He pointed out that Real Estate in the US is still out of control. I sort of assumed that when I heard models were competing for a spot on a house flipping show. Prices increase etc, but if you look at what our parents paid compared to what we will have to- it almost is bubble like.

Here is what this guy saw a few blocks away from his place

"It features no landscaping. 950 square feet of living spaces. And sixty year old plumbing. It can be yours for $2 million."

Um now that you have seen the picture- enough said!!!

Artist Akon grinds on stage with underage girl

So there I was watching TV before my day started and noticed a nasty little video of Akon simulating sex acts with a 14 year old girl at a concert.

I must admit I like his music!

I guess you can form your own opinion..... is this too far?

David Miller and Taxing Toronto.....

Now I used to be a fan of David Miller but now he wants to implement more taxes or "levies". (make sure you see the list down the page)

He wants to put a surcharge on parking in downtown TO, because apparently it isn't expensive enough as it is. If he is the socialist mayor I think he is, then why is he not thinking about the people who can't afford to drive downtown.....
http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_5624.aspx

Oh but he will say that people are supposed to take the TTC for $2.75 a person. It almost makes more sense to own a car.... That is expensive for a family of 3 or 4. Would that be close to $10.00 per trip or something!! I want to know why there is so much staff on the TTC, wouldn't it be better to have a trust system and have someone monitor tickets on the train like other sophisticated cities????

If that isn't enough here is the list courtesy of pulse 24....this guy is NUTS. He just got re-elected and now he is doing everything that nobody has any interest in. Why doesn't Montreal have these problems, or Vancouver.
http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_8824.aspx

Proposed Tax: AlcoholAmount: $70 (tax on store sales only), $70 (licensee tax)Total Raised Annually If Implemented: $25.3 millionComment: A tax on store sales has several benefits over a tax on licensee sales since a store tax would be broader in scope and easier to administer. The affect of an alcohol tax on Toronto businesses would also be lower if a tax on store sales was implemented.

Proposed Tax: CigarettesAmount: a 5% increase totaling about $137 annuallyTotal Raised Annually If Implemented: $43.7 million for stores sales, $25.3 million on licensees.Comment: A cigarette tax could be used to reduce consumption levels. However, tax avoidance could be a significant problem as tobacco products could be easily purchased in adjacent municipalities. The large number of cigarette vendors may also make the administration of the tax more challenging than for some of the other options.

Proposed Tax: Movie Tickets, Sporting Events, Live Theatre Amount: a 5% increase totaling about $6Total Raised Annually If Implemented: $17.1 millionComment: A tax may be contrary to City policy objectives such as promoting the arts.

Proposed Tax: Road TollsWhere: On the DVP or the Gardiner; or a "congestion tax" similar to the one in London, England.Amount: $655 annually based on weekday toll trips for one year Total Raised Annually If Implemented: More than $75 million.Comment: The start-up and ongoing administration costs of a road pricing system are substantial. Additionally, a road pricing system would have implications for the wider transportation network.

Proposed Tax: ParkingWhere: Downtown coreAmount: $100 per stall per year charged to lot ownerTotal Raised Annually If Implemented: $7.2 millionComment: A parking tax would specifically target downtown businesses which may run contrary to existing City policies on reducing the tax burden of commercial properties.

Proposed Tax: Vehicle RegistrationAmount: $40 for each passenger and light commercial vehiclesTotal Raised Annually If Implemented: $42 millionComment: Administration costs would likely be small assuming an administration agreement can be reached with the Ministry of Transportation and licensing agents. A rate structure corresponding to an environmental policy would likely take more time and money to implement than a flat rate.

Proposed Tax: Property Land TransferAmount: $1,650 per home when sold at 0.5% tax on sale priceTotal Raised Annually If Implemented: $102.7 million assuming 2006 transaction levels and sales prices.Comment: A land transfer tax is narrower in scope than the property tax and revenue is susceptible to real estate market fluctuations.

Proposed Tax: Outdoor BillboardsAmount: VariedTotal Raised Annually If Implemented: $2.6 millionComment: A billboard tax would be very narrow in scope and accordingly its revenue generating capacity is small.

I say GET HIM OUT NOW!!!

Britney Spears gone mad...

Normally I don't like to get into gossip, celebrity nonsense lah de dah but I was watching tv this week and looking through the internet and ran into some really interesting stuff.

Britney Spears is nuts.... she has 2 kids and decided to shave her head... and in the same week attacked a photographer with an umbrella.

Is it my business??? Nope but it came across as really disturbing and entertaining that I just had to share it with everyone.

Click the link...

Can anyone say PSYCHO..... I've gone out with a few women like this in my day!!!

NBA star Tim Hardaway says "I hate gay people"

What a loser Tim Hardaway is...... well there goes all of the endorsements and respect anyone had for him!

I don't remember the last tangent I have heard like this one. Take a look at this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbqCUxJC0RI

I notice that most of the time, these type of comments occur in the US. In Canada we are almost more willing to accept. I guess that is a generalization in itself, but I think for the most part it is true. I mean where else can you openly say, I don't like gays or minorities in such an open forum without any problems.......

Anyways watch the video and draw your own conclusions.....

Icy Car Crashes in Portland in a snow storm

This video is unbelievable. I can't believe the icy conditions on this street. Apparently nobody wanted to tell the cars to stop driving down the street..... WOW

New Canadian Conservative Party Advertisement

I'm really ticked off about this ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNrDUjSzd-I&mode=related&search=

My view on election advertisements.... if you don't have any productive to add then don't say anything at all. I don't really care whether or not you think someone has done a good or bad job but what have you done for me lately...... and the conservative have done NOTHING.

What purpose does this ad serve??? any comments??? It sure isn't reaching out to the average voter. It doesn't make me say you know what they are right, instead I am left wondering why would I vote for these dirty politicians!!!

Does anybody remember when the conservatives decided it was time to clamp down on income trusts??? Canadians lost billions of dollars.... How you ask? Well besides the hedge funds..... seniors were the ones investing in these things hand over fist. On the day of the announcement, these stocks fell 30%. I thought the conservatives promised to keep income trusts the way they were..... I guess we must have misinterpreted!

Bridezilla: Canadian girl goes bonkers.... about her hair

Wow.... so it turns out that this was a bunch of actresses doing their thing but I must say awesome job. I've never really seen a girl freak out quite like that... well maybe one or two.. anyways.

George Bush visits the New York Stock Exchange Floor

Oh my... what an interesting day. Half way through the trading day Bush decided to interrupt the New York Stock Exchange floor for a quick visit. Hmmm the question is if the stock market wasn't at record highs and if the economy wasn't humming along would he be visiting??? So I guess this is like a victory parade..... anyways I found it quite annoying that trading pretty much stopped for a good 45 mins....

Oh and I almost forgot, the commentator from CNBC Bob Pisani.... is quite amusing. Thank gosh he doesn't do play by play like this very often.

http://www.nyse.com/about/newsevents/fromthefloor.html

I couldn't help think to myself that Bush comes out when things are great for the Rich, even thought the growing disparities between rich and poor continues to widen. Hmm I guess in his mind he is thinking that the lower class participated in the stock market rally since the summer??? I think not. When Iraq goes wrong, and nobody likes you.... at least you can claim that you are responsible for the rising stock market. Less then two years until we are done with this guy. Good grief! I think I'm going to start doing some more business posts, something with deeper content!

How NOT to Handle Things in Iraq....

Alrighty... I'm really pissed off tonight which means only one thing... time to blog about it.

So I'm working out in the gym tonight and CNN breaking news crosses the screen. They screwed up the hanging of Saddams "aides". They were supposed to hang him... which they did and they managed to decapitate him. I'm repulsed, disgusted by this.....

http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/01/15/hanging.reax.reut/index.html

Of course the US denies having anything to do with the decision to hang them.... ya right and they are still searching for those Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Why am I so upset??? I'm not from over there, alot of the issues over there don't directly relate to me..... then why do I care????

I think it is because I'm a human! I'm not sure who gave us the right to decide who is to live or die.... and made us the ultimate judge. I mean I know that they took the lives of many innocent people in Iraq, but who are we to take their lives...... put them away for the rest of their lives but don't do this.

I'm almost sure of it now, that the world is run by some of the most ignorant people.... if they can allow this sort of stuff to happen. For a country that is trying to establish a democracy but is divided by two different factions....this is definitely the type of thing that could stir a civil war and lead to broader middle eastern conflict. Oh not to mention that we can't even travel to certain parts of the world... its sucks and I'm really repulsed.

Glad I got that out oh and Happy New Year to all!!!!!
